New Titles

  • Chains and Forge by Laurie Halse Anderson - two YA recommended by Kelly as enjoyable for adults as well.
  • Reversal by Michael Connelly from Jim. "Not on the NY Best Seller List, but should be.  Courtroom/mystery and a great read!"
  • Happy Accidents” with Marisa Tomei - recommended by Mary.  Different premise, but interesting.

From Jim...

Fall of Giants by Ken Follitt
Eleven points on a scale of 1 - 10 for Ken Follitt's latest book, Fall of Giants. Similar to World Without End & Pillers of the Earth in technique, but in an entirely different time period - pre WWI through to the end of the war and the events that followed.  A variety of characters who eventually interact with each other in most interesting circumstances. He ties the whole story together in a very entertaining read but the strongest recommendation is that when you have finished the book you will have a real understanding for the events of that period, how little events had major impact on future events. (very well researched) History buffs will love it. It's a book that you have to put down only because it's over 800 pages long, but when you are done with it you can be sure that the next two books you try to read will be disappointing by comparison.

Must Read from Jim...

  • Shutter Island by Dennis LeHane
"Writes like Jon Katzenback (one of my favorites) and I defy anyone to write the ending on this one till you close the book.  They're going to make a movie of this one. If you see the movie, don't bother reading the book. If you read the book first, you won't want to see the movie. Suspense, twists and turns - GOOD read. Pick it up when you have nothing left to do for a while."

From Jim...

  • Night and Day by Robert B Parker
"It was on the best seller list for a while. Short read, (too short) and very enjoyable. It's not a book you can't put down, but one you are always glad to pick up again. It has a couple of minor plots going on but they are incidental to the book which is really about the characters in the book, their foibles, how the react to each other and to circumstances. I love a book that fills out a character so fully that you really know them."
